Areas of Expertise

Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by excessive fear, worry, or nervousness that can interfere with daily life. This includes obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), generalized anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety, specific phobias (including agoraphobia), Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS), Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS), and other related conditions.

Symptoms can affect both the mind and body, such as persistent worry, restlessness, difficulty concentrating, rapid heartbeat, or trouble sleeping. Anxiety disorders are common and can improve significantly with therapy.

Stress-Related Conditions

Stress-related conditions involve emotional and physical responses to ongoing or acute stress that can affect overall well-being. These may include adjustment disorders, acute stress disorder, and symptoms of burnout. Stress may be due to work or school pressures, relationship challenges, major life transitions, financial concerns, or ongoing caregiving responsibilities.

People experiencing these conditions often feel overwhelmed, irritable, fatigued, or anxious, and may have difficulty concentrating or managing daily responsibilities. With appropriate support, including therapy, coping strategies, and lifestyle adjustments, individuals can learn to manage stress effectively and improve their quality of life.

Health Psychology

Health psychology in outpatient therapy helps individuals cope with the emotional and psychological challenges of living with chronic illness or medical conditions. Therapy can support clients in managing stress, anxiety, or depression related to their health, improving adherence to medical recommendations.

This focus in therapy helps clients process the impact of their condition, foster support and community engagement, and identify adaptive skills. By addressing the mental and emotional aspects of illness, outpatient health psychology aims to enhance overall well-being and help clients maintain a better quality of life despite ongoing health challenges.

Body Image & Disordered Eating

Body image and disordered eating concerns involve distress or unhealthy patterns related to one’s body, weight, or eating behaviors. This can include negative body perception, restrictive eating, binge eating, or other maladaptive habits that impact physical and emotional health. Therapy in this area focuses on developing a healthier relationship with food and body image, addressing underlying emotional or cognitive patterns, and building sustainable healthy habits to support overall well-being.

Please note that RTCNJ does not provide treatment for clinical eating disorders, which require specialized medical and nutritional support. My work focuses on body image concerns and disordered eating patterns that impact emotional well-being, stress, or self-esteem. Individuals with more severe or medically complex eating disorders are encouraged to seek care from a multidisciplinary team.

Narcissistic Abuse

Narcissistic abuse refers to the emotional, psychological, and relational harm caused by someone who consistently exhibits manipulative, controlling, or self-centered behaviors. This can occur in intimate relationships, family dynamics, friendships, or workplace interactions.

Therapy in this area focuses on helping individuals recognize patterns of abuse, rebuild self-esteem, establish healthy boundaries, grieve the relationship, understand their identity (as this is often deprioritized during NA), identify strengths, and develop emotional resilience to navigate challenging relationships safely.

Interpersonal Relationships

Research shows that fulfilling relationships are a key component of happy and meaningful lives and supporting emotional well‑being and resilience. Building and maintaining healthy relationships can be especially challenging for individuals who didn’t experience positive relationship models, have the opportunity to develop relationship skills, or whose mental health challenges have created additional obstacles.

Therapy provides a safe space to navigate challenges with a partner, family member, or close friend, explore communication patterns, set boundaries, and deepen understanding. Individuals can learn to resolve conflict, strengthen emotional connections, and cultivate more fulfilling, resilient relationships.

Your Insurance Questions, Answered

  • Plan information is provided to all health plan subscribers at enrollment. Those with employer-sponsored coverage may obtain a copy directly from their employer (typically through HR or benefits office). For plans purchased through the marketplace, users can typically access their plan information through the user portal. Benefits differ among plans and carriers.

You can also call the member services number (usually a 1-800 number) listed on your insurance card to speak directly with your insurance provider to request a copy of benefits information or for clarification about your coverage.

  • Not all plans include all three—please review your policy or call your insurer to confirm what applies to your mental health benefits.

Your deductible is the amount you must pay out-of-pocket each year before your insurance begins to share costs. Most plans reset their deductible annually—usually on January 1, though some use a different schedule. Once your new benefit year starts, your deductible typically resets, meaning you need to meet it again before coverage begins.

Coinsurance is the percentage of each session you’re responsible for after meeting your deductible.

A copay is a fixed amount (for example, $25) you pay at each visit.

  • An Explanation of Benefits (EOB) is a summary your insurance company sends after a claim is processed. It’s not a bill—it simply shows what was billed, how much your insurance covered, and what you might owe. Reviewing your EOB helps you verify that your claims are processed correctly.

  • A superbill is a detailed invoice that includes all the information your insurance company needs to process a claim for out-of-network reimbursement—such as the provider’s name, NPI, diagnosis and procedure codes (CPT codes), and session dates. You can submit this document directly to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.

  • Due to federal program restrictions, we are not able to bill or submit reimbursement claims for clients covered by Medicaid or Medicare. Individuals with this coverage may still receive services on a private-pay basis.

Contacting Insurance Companies

Payment is due at the time of service. Coverage and reimbursement for out-of-network services vary by plan.

For private pay clients, we recommend contacting your insurance company directly to inquire about potential reimbursement, as they can provide the most accurate estimate.

1. Find your insurance information

Have your card handy with your member ID, group number, and customer service number.

3. Ask detailed questions:

  • For an exact estimate, you may need Dr. DeRiso’s National Provider Identifier (NPI), which is #1174357743

  • What are my out-of-network benefits for mental health services?

  • Do I have a deductible to meet before my plan would provide reimbursement?

  • What is the co-pay or co-insurance for out-of-network sessions?

  • What is the reimbursement rate for the following services (identified by CPT codes):

    • 90791 (Intake session)

    • 90832 (30 min)

    • 90834 (45 min)

    • 90837 (60 min)

  • How do I submit a claim for reimbursement?

  • What documentation do I need to submit for reimbursement (i.e., superbills)?

  • Are there any limitations or other requirements?

2. Call the customer service number

Ask to speak with a representative about out-of-network mental health benefits.

4. Take notes

Record the representative’s name, date, and instructions, and keep any paperwork for future reference.

  • "Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen."
